Yes, We Tell Our Dogs “No” (But There Are Some Big “Buts”) | Off the Leash Podcast Ep. 7

About Off the Leash

Our members-only podcast where we go beyond neat little step-by-step tutorials and take a deeper dive into a variety of dog topics. Because real life isn’t black and white – and neither is dog training. The good stuff lives in the nuance.

Episode description

We’re talkin’ punishment, corrections, the word “no,” and how all that stuff fits into our approach to training and living with dogs.

Because the truth is that even as force-free/positive/reward-based trainers (we hate all these labels btw, but it is what it is), we do tell our dogs not to do stuff. Often, without even providing them an alternative behavior to do instead! Shock horror.

(In fact, there’s an unplanned yet convenient demo of us telling our dog not to do something in the episode itself! Watch the video version for that moment to make the most sense)

But.

There’s a lot of fine print involved, to make sure we do it in an ethical, fair way that does not backfire, harm the dog, or damage the relationship.
